| Monette
Russo is one of Australia's best female gymnasts ever. Her
instant rise in the Australian ranks showed amazing promise,
and Monette had the talent to match. Despite her small stature,
Monette was both powerful and graceful, and her results will
see her remembered as one of Australia's most decorated gymnasts
in history.
The
year 2001 marked Monette's first national all around title,
where she won the Junior National division. One year later,
Monette finished fifth all around in Junior International.
2003
began tremendously for Monette, with her first international
all around victory at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival
in Sydney. The year continued with a 3rd place finish as a
senior at the Australian Championships, 12th all around and
8th on beam in the World Championships, and a second international
all around victory at the International Japan Juniors.
In
2004, Monette's dream of the Olympic Games became a reality.
Despite a serious leg injury, Monette competed for Australia
with pride, doing her country proud. Rehabilitation followed,
and 2005 began where she left off. Netty won several medals
at the Australia v Ukraine international dual, won her first
Australian National Senior all around title, and the all around
at the Australia v China international dual.
History
was made later in 2005, where Monette again took on the world
at the 2005 World Championships in Melbourne. Monette became
Australia's first ever all around medallist at a World Championships,
by winning the bronze. In addition, she became the first Australian
to compete in multiple apparatus finals (bars, beam and floor).
Monette also won the prestigious Longines Prize for Elegance.
After
leading her Commonwealth Games team to the gold medal, Monette
sustained a serious knee injury prior to the World Championships.
The injury forced her out of the team, and eventually led
to her retirement from the sport. However, Monette is without
a doubt one of Australia's best ever gymnasts, and will be
remembered for a very long time to come.
